About
One listener, one room, no shop.
This site exists because most hi-fi writing is either a shop with opinions attached or an argument between strangers. Neither helped me set up a stereo. This is the explanation I wanted.
The Listening Room is written by one enthusiast. It sells nothing, recommends no specific product to buy, and takes no commission on anything. What it tries to do is explain how a system goes together, translate the specifications, and be honest about which arguments are settled and which are not.
What this site is not
It is not a manufacturer, a dealer or a retailer. It is not connected in any way to Usher Audio, which is a real loudspeaker company, nor to any other maker. There is no shop here, no prices, no affiliate links and no basket. There are no rankings, no scores, and no “best of” lists — because a component that suits one room and one pair of ears has no business being called best in general.
Real brands, real components and real measurement tools are named where naming them teaches something. That is a normal part of explaining how equipment works, and pretending otherwise would make the writing worse.
How claims are handled
Hi-fi is full of assertions of wildly different quality, and lumping them together is how readers get taken advantage of. Everything on this site is sorted into one of three registers, and where it matters the register is stated in the text.
| Register | What it means | How it is written here |
|---|---|---|
| Measurable | Repeatable on a bench, published with the conditions of the measurement. | Stated plainly, with the conditions attached. |
| Disputed | Measurable, but whether it is audible is genuinely argued over by reasonable people. | Both sides given, with what would settle it. |
| Preference | A real choice with no correct answer — a taste, a look, a ritual. | Named as preference, and not sneered at. |
Two further rules follow from that. No figure is invented: where a number would be needed and is not reliably known, the article explains what the specification means instead of asserting a value. And no marketing claim is repeated as fact, however often it appears elsewhere.
How it is paid for
A small number of supporter slots, sold directly and labelled as advertising wherever they appear. Supporters get a wordmark, a link and one short line. They do not get mentions inside articles, they do not see drafts, and they cannot buy a favourable word — there are no favourable words about products here to buy. There are no affiliate links anywhere on this site, and there is no tracking beyond what a plain static page needs, which is nothing.
Corrections
Corrections are made in place, and a note is added to the foot of the piece describing what changed and why. Nothing is quietly rewritten. Since the site carries no dates — the physics has not moved and neither has most of the advice — a correction note is the only honest way to show that a page has changed.
Found an error, a badly explained specification, or a claim stated more confidently than the evidence allows? Say so.
